For Boon Yee Siew, accuracy and consistency are essential to keeping operations running smoothly at Highline Mushrooms. As an operations improvement analyst at Highline Mushrooms, Siew says she spends much of the day “creating and maintaining material master records, ensuring data is accurate, duplicate-free, and properly configured for business use.”

After nearly 17 years in the mushroom industry, Siew still finds the work rewarding. “My favorite part of my current career is that it helps keep the company’s information accurate and consistent,” says Siew.

For those entering the produce industry, Siew says it’s important to understand seasonality and prioritize freshness. “Learn the season and focus on quality,” she says. “Nowadays, I think most customers are after freshness, as well as the value in produce. In my opinion, that means the pressure as a business would be to keep the products looking uniform, reducing waste, and the efficiency in responding to the change of the customer’s expectation.”

Outside of work, Siew enjoys exploring Bazi, also known as Chinese metaphysics.

A regular reader of Produce Business, Siew says the magazine helps her understand the market trends of the business.

As this month’s winner, Siew will receive a $200 Amazon gift card.
