If you find yourself driving around southeast Texas, you may just see a license plate that reads, “Ms Mango!” that belongs to Cindy Schwing.

Schwing is no stranger to the produce industry and has been involved, primarily on the supply side, for 30-plus years. “I seem to have spent the most years in the mango business, so I guess it’s fair to say I love mangos, mango people and the mango industry,” she says.

She did step away from the industry while raising her children, and during that time, she taught college and high school Spanish, co-owned a restaurant, and worked in broadcasting.

“My thread, interestingly enough, has always been my Spanish. I use it now more than ever as I work for Splendid and travel to our facilities in N. Sinaloa, as well as communicate with the team on a daily basis,” she says.

Schwing is also passionate about building relationships. “I like doing business the old school way, and miss the days when calling customers was part of what you did every day. There’s still some of that, but not near what there used to be.”

As vice president of marketing at Splendid by Porvenir, Schwing works closely with the sales staff and retailers, coordinates plans for upcoming events/trade shows, and reviews all marketing efforts. “As always in the produce business, it’s fast-paced and dynamic, and offers a new challenge or two to overcome. I think it’s why the produce business gets in your blood.”

In her free time, Schwing likes to exercise, shop, garden, watch movies and travel.

She likes Produce Business for its interesting topics, and that the writers are always thorough and prepared. “It’s an excellent way to stay abreast of trends and our changing produce landscape. Retail has always caught my attention and store checking is one of my favorite things to do, even when on vacation.”
