Bill Vargas: ‘I Was Immediately Smitten’

Commodity Sales Manager, Iceberg Lettuce
Ippolito International

Being from Salinas, I knew the ag industry was a big part of Salinas’ culture. In the 1980s, I was working in a local electronics store, and came in contact with many who were in the produce industry. It intrigued me, and I started asking questions. I realized this was the industry where I wanted to be, and, in 1986, I got my first break into the business from Ray Pangle as a produce broker. I learned many things from Ray, and was impressed with his drive and his knowledge of the produce business, as well as his integrity.

It did not take long for me to see the opportunities for growth, and I was immediately smitten. It was exciting, hard work — but fun.

I took a sales job with Bud of California (Dole), then joined the Bruce Church Company. After nine years, I went to Growers Vegetable Express, where Butch Corda made me a commodity manager for the first time. After another nine years there, I followed Butch to work at Ippolito International. I was hired to manage the broccoli commodity, then shifted to iceberg lettuce. Ippolito has been a fantastic company to work for, and I am still happily working for them.

You learn something every day! At first in sales, and then as a commodity manager, I enjoyed the constant challenges. I learned a lot from the field people I have worked with over the years — they have a big impact on the success of any program, and now, working as a commodity manager, I realize just how valuable they are.

I get pumped up when I can help other salespeople develop new customers, or maintain our current customers’ continued support. As a commodity manager, I enjoy working with other salespeople to help them excel.

It has been rewarding, and I have made many friends and met so many great people, I am proud to be a part of this exciting business.
