Seducing your senses with local produce and scenic views.
Few dining establishments display the rebirth of a downtown like Andiamo Ristorante’s Detroit riverfront location. The sophisticated, urban chic white tablecloth establishment serves up authentic Northern Italian cuisine in the heart of the city, while enticing patrons with panoramic views of the Detroit River.
“The rejuvenation of Detroit has been tremendous,” says Mike Nowinski, operating partner at Andiamo Ristorante Italiano. “It’s been awesome. It was pretty bad in 2008. The remodel of the Cobo Center (Detroit’s convention center) just finished, and the conventions have started coming back.”
Andiamo offers banquets, catering, and lunch and dinner at nine locations in the greater Detroit area. The Detroit Riverfront location is a short walk from the Cobo Center and has a presence on the first floor of Cobo, offering pasta, meatballs and pizza options.
The Mediterranean fare at the signature location features produce from nearby Michigan farms. The antipasti menu features Caprese Italiani with vine-ripened tomato, certified Bufala mozzarella, shaved fennel, balsamic vinegar, lemon oil, basil and arugula. The menu also offers Italian Wedding Soup with Italian vegetables, cranberry beans, vegetable broth and tomato.
A variety of salads are also on the menu, including Red Lentil & Baby Scarlett Kale featuring heirloom tomatoes, English cucumbers, verbena mint, chilled lentils, fava beans, tender kale, lemon-olive oil vinaigrette and pickled red onion, and Grilled Salmon Salad featuring farmers greens, cucumber, radish, tomato, avocado, capers, basil, shaved fennel and balsamic dressing.
Produce-intense entrees include char-broiled filet Andiamo with Italian-style potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a signature zip sauce, and cedar plank salmon char-broiled with red lentils, asparagus and herbs, ribbons of summer squash and zucchini, and spring pea tendrils.
There is even a full gluten-free plant-based menu and a grab-and-go-menu offering meat or cheese ravioli with a farmer’s green salad and minestrone, baked gemelli (pasta) or a choice of three types of chicken scallopini.
Andiamo buys local when it can. “Our customers like local produce a lot. We use Greg’s Produce in Detroit; he’s a hometown guy,” says Nowinski. “We use him in all the Andiamo locations.”
As one of the many signs of the city’s revival, the Detroit Restaurant Association was reborn this summer, and the Andiamo downtown location is among the crown jewels. “Fabulous, authentic, northern Italian cuisine makes Andiamo Detroit Riverfront the ‘must-see’ restaurant located in the heart of Detroit,” the website promises. “The scene inside is inviting, sophisticated and urban chic, seducing your senses like no other downtown establishment can. The uncompromising cuisine is authentic, artistic and world-class.”
